While Atchison County's major employers are in the education and health care fields, our business-friendly environment has encouraged the growth of agriculture-related businesses, wind energy, and technology in recent years. Wind energy has produced three new projects in Atchison County in the last 4 years. Wind Capital Group established two wind farms near Rock Port: Loess Hills & Cow Branch. Iberdola Renewables, a Spanish-based company, dedicated the Farmers City wind farm just north of Tarkio in 2010. In addition to dozens of farm-related Atchison County businesses that have thrived for years, the newest addition to our business community is DeBruce Grain, located in Phelps City. This state-of-the-art facility is the largest grain elevator between Omaha, NE and Kansas City, MO, and is capable of handling a 130-car train and dumping trucks at 75,000 bph through 4 truck receiving pits. DeBruce is able to load rail cars at 80,000 bph. |
